Government requests for online user data must not be cloaked in secrecy

In this South China Morning Post op-ed, Hong Kong Transparency Report’s Jennifer Zhang calls for strict guidelines and voluntary disclosure by internet service providers.

To act responsibly to the more than five million internet users in Hong Kong, local internet companies should start notifying users of their detailed policies for handling government requests, and actively disclosing statistics of the requests they received, including the number of requests they accede to.
