The Customs and Excise Department has contacted 25 local ISP's to make a total of 1,6575 requests for the name and the Hong Kong identity card numbers of Internet users.
The department cited crime prevention and detection as reasons for its aggressive policing of the Internet. All the requests were acceded to.
The Lands Department has been zealous in guarding what it terms "Government's copyright" by going after websites that have posted its maps online.
The department succeeded in three cases in forcing the websites to remove the maps in question.
The Government has been criticized for charging the public for public information. In contrast, many governments offer information to the public for free.
